Peter Williams Sensei started his martial arts training at the age of 7, starting with Jūdō. He played Jūdō for most of his primary and high school years, before taking a break while he finished his schooling. During this period he competed in Tae Kwon Do (Chung Do Kwan Tae Kwon Do, under 9th Dan Chun Suk Suh), reaching national level competition in 1983. In 1984 Peter recommenced his study of Jūdō, Karate and Jūjutsu simultaneously alongside Tae Kwon Do, before giving away Tae Kwon Do in order to focus on his study of the traditional Japanese martial arts.
He has been teaching continuously at the Epping Dōjō, Sydney NSW since 1984. This dōjō was originally started in 1969, with its direction falling to a progression of instructors until 1987. Peter has been the head instructor and dōjō manager at Epping since 1987 when it was passed on to him.
In March 2017, Peter established Kumataka Dōjōs with Thomas Crooks. In 2018, under the direction of Sosuishi-ryu Jūjutsu’s 16th Dai Menkyo, Shitama Manzo Sensei, Peter and Thomas established the Sōsuishi-ryū Jūjutsu Kai Australia (SJJK-AUS). In 2023, on the auspicious occasion of Sōsuishi-ryu Jūjutsu’s 370th Anniversary, Shitama Sensei appointed Peter and Thomas as Regional Directors of Sōsuishi-ryu Jūjutsu in the Australia & New Zealand region. Peter holds the teaching teaching title of Kyōshi in Sōsuishi-ryū Jūjutsu, and the rank of Gomokuroku (5th black belt degree in the Mokuroku-Menkyo system used in Sosuishi-ryu), both conferred by Shitama Manzo Sensei. He is a member of the Sekiryūkan Seikai’in, holding full membership with the Shadanhōjin Sekiryūkan Dōjō in Fukuoka.
Peter was awarded Shodan in Judo, in 1991, by the All Japan Budo Federation, Seibukan Academy, in Kyoto, Japan. He holds an NCAS Level 1 Judo Coaching certification with Judo Australia, and is a member of the Kodokan Judo Institute, Tokyo.
